And honestly? We're pretty okay with that.
Look, I started this practice back in 2011 because I was tired of seeing buildings that looked good on Instagram but couldn't handle a Toronto winter. Or designs that won awards but made their occupants miserable. Something had to give.
The thing about sustainable architecture is it's not just slapping some solar panels on a roof and calling it a day. It's about actually understanding how a space breathes, how people move through it, how it'll age over decades not just seasons. We've spent years figuring this stuff out - sometimes the hard way, through mistakes and do-overs that kept me up at night.
These days, our studio on Queen West has grown into something I'm genuinely proud of. We've got a team that actually gets it - people who'll argue with me about thermal bridging over coffee and won't settle for "good enough" when we can do better.
First meetings usually happen over coffee, not in some stuffy boardroom. We need to understand what you're really after - not just what you think you should say to an architect.
Every project starts with listening. Then we dig into the site analysis, climate data, local materials, heritage considerations if they're relevant. We're kinda obsessive about the research phase because that's where the good ideas come from.
Our design process is collaborative but we're not gonna let bad ideas slide just to be nice. If something doesn't work thermally or structurally or just feels wrong for the neighborhood, we'll tell you straight up. That honesty has saved more projects than it's killed.
And yeah, we use all the latest tech - BIM modeling, energy simulations, the works. But we also still sketch by hand because sometimes your brain works differently with a pencil.
Beyond the blueprints and building codes
Every building we design needs to make sense on a utility bill. It's not optional, it's fundamental. We've seen too many "luxury" projects with astronomical heating costs.
We use materials that are what they say they are. Local when possible, durable always, and sourced responsibly. Greenwashing isn't our thing.
Buildings are for people, not portfolios. We design spaces that actually feel good to inhabit, day after day, year after year. Comfort matters.
New doesn't mean ignoring what's already there. We're big believers in understanding a site's history and the neighborhood fabric before we change anything.

Heritage building brought into the 21st century without losing its soul
We don't chase awards, but it's nice when the work gets noticed by people who understand what we're trying to do.
We're based in a renovated heritage building on Queen West - kinda fitting for what we do. The space has exposed brick, killer natural light, and way too many coffee cups at any given moment.
Drop by if you're in the area. We're usually around, and there's always a decent espresso brewing. Fair warning though - you might get roped into a debate about window flashing details.
